The escape method from the black hole, using the space ships jointly as thrusting power (and then leaving only one thrusting ship behind for Hathaway's character), resembles the escape method in 2010 - L'anno del contatto (1984) (from one of Jupiter's changing moons) as well as one used in an animated Star Trek show.
