The Duffer Brothers (Matt Duffer and Ross Duffer) originally wanted to direct the remake of Stephen King's It, but were turned down. Finn Wolfhard (who was always the first choice to play Mike) was already attached to play Richie in It (2017). However, production delays caused filming of that project to be pushed back a year, therefore making Wolfhard available to participate in both projects.
