Dylan Neal, who portrayed Doug Witter, briefly left the show in season two to work on another The WB series "Hyperion Bay". The producers of "Dawson's Creek" were supposed to expand the role of Doug and his closeted homosexuality in season two but Neal's abrupt departure made it impossible. However, Doug was revealed to be gay in the final season of the show.
