When K asks why Gaff believed Rick Deckard was always going to end up leaving society, Gaff says, "It was something in his eyes." This could mean that he could read Deckard's intentions from his facial expressions. It may also allude to the theory that Deckard is a Replicant himself (which the Director's and Final Cut of Blade Runner (1982) hint at). In the original, the Voight-Kampff test used to identify Replicants focused intensely on the subject's eyes and pupil responses. The Replicants' pupils also glow occasionally. In one scene, Deckard's pupils glow briefly while he talks to Rachael.
