In the first beach battle scene, Master Sergeant Farell says, "Here they come, mean as hell and thick as grass." This is a reference to the battle of Rorke's Drift during the Zulu War of 1879. When the Zulus arrived to attack the British position, a lookout reported "Here they come! Black as hell and thick as grass!"
