Ebenezer means "Rock of Help" and is a Biblical place-name. It is explained in 1 Samuel 7:12 as marking the fact that Yahweh had helped the Israelites in battle up to that place. More directly, Scrooge's name is based on that of Ebenezer Scroggie, a caterer to the wealthy who was described as being a 'meal man' on his tombstone. When he visited the grave, Charles Dickens misread this as 'mean man,' and, thus, Ebenezer Scrooge was born.
