"Saladin" is the European version of his title "Salah al-Din", meaning "Defender of the Faith". His full title and Kurdish name was Salah al-Din Yusuf ibn Ayyub, which directly translates as "Yusuf, son of Ayyub, Defender of the Faith". He was later to found a short-lived dynasty known as the Ayyubids.
