Cleopatra (and her siblings) were members of the Ptolemaic dynasty, which ruled Egypt for 275 years (305-30 BC). The dynasty's founder was Ptolemy I Soter (c. 367-282 BC, reigned 305-282 BC), a Macedonian Greek general who had previously served under Alexander the Great. Ptolemy I was reputedly Alexander's paternal half-brother.
