Christopher Reeve had brown hair that was somewhat wavy and curly, as can be seen in other movies he was in (e.g., Cambio marito (1988) and Trappola mortale (1982)). They dyed his hair jet black and straightened it out to match the looks of his character for this movie. That's partly why Reeve's hair always looks wet in this movie; it's been combed and wet and sprayed down so it doesn't curl and it matches Clark/Superman's classic Ken Doll hairstyle.
