Starting with season 3, Eric's intelligence decreased more and more throughout the remainder of the series, due to the amount of laughs his character got in regards to his stupidity as the series progressed. This eventually made Eric more prominently featured as a main character with his own story arcs in future episodes. The regression of his intelligence started after Eric kept getting injured while trying to study for finals in a late episode of season 2. Late in season 5, Jack points this out by saying "He's getting worse."
