Beth Sullivan, who named Loren Bray after her grandfather, never intended for him to have a softer side. Her grandfather was a grumpy, mean man, and that was her idea for Loren's character. But Orson Bean had an immediate connection with Shawn Toovey on the set and it was impossible not to write that bond into the show.
