In one major departure from the novel, Howard Hawks decided not to have Lauren Bacall turn out to be an accomplice to murder (and omitted the murder victim from the story as well). That allowed her to enjoy a final clinch with Humphrey Bogart while at the same time capitalising on the couple's success together in Acque del Sud (1944) and their romantic relationship off-screen.
