The first Japanese dub of the film was done in 1973, and the film was released in Japan with some scenes cut. For the 2009 TV dub, most of the Japanese cast was brought back, but Yasuo Yamada, the Japanese voice of Manco, died in 1995. The staff was worried about finding a good replacement for Yamada. A staff member heard Yohei Tadano's performance as Leslie in 'Hime-san no Goyojin' and said "There's a guy who sounds like Lupin!", referring to Yamada's renowned role of Lupin III. In this way, Tadano was cast.
