It is possible that the character Colonel 'Bat' Guano may have been loosely based on the general, Matthew Ridgway. He was famous for having two grenades on his fatigues in order to show his troops he was a fighter too. It was said that his aides-de-camp may have give him neutralized grenades in order to avoid unexpected accident.
