Harve Bennett blamed the relatively low box-office results partly on Star Trek: The Next Generation (1987). Bennett believed the series had eased the Trek fanbase's desire for more product. As a result, he felt the fans preferred to stay home weekend evenings for first run TNG episodes, rather than going out for multiple viewings of this film.
