Although "Yellowstone" is set in Montana, 95% of Yellowstone National Park (YNP) lies within the state of Wyoming. Roughly 4% of YNP lies within Montana and about 1% is in Idaho. The name of the ranch refers to its proximity to the northern gates of the Yellowstone National Park. It is also the name of a river that runs north into Montana, including through Livingston, which is frequently mentioned in the show, and is likely near, if not in, the valley of the ranch.
