Sir Ridley Scott's first cut ran four hours. Most of the crew, including the writers and director, admitted that while it looked beautiful, it was mostly incomprehensible due to story problems, which necessitated additional editing and an explanatory voice-over. However, they had wanted to included a voice-over that supplemented the mood of the scenes, like music; not a voice-over that literally explained everything.
