The sequence in which Morrie trains the neighbor boy, Jimmy, to serve as his seeing eye ends with the unpleasant reality that people, despite their best intentions, cannot be held accountable without fail in terms of timing. This is soon revealed to be the major difference in terms of a seeing-eye dog, who is actually more dependable than a fellow human because a dog has no other pursuits, no unexpected schedule conflicts, no transit delays, and no split focus from the task at hand.
