Boy and his father share the name Alamein. His father Alamein pretends to play war games with his sons on the beach. This is an allusion to the first and second Battle of El Alamein the New Zealand Maori Battalion participated in at El-Alamein Egypt in World War 2 where they helped repel Rommel's army which ultimately led to securing the Suez canal for the Allies.
