Mason's two pistols hanging up above the door to his office are Colt Single Action Army revolvers, chambered in .45 Long Colt. This revolver was designed in 1872, and was adopted as the standard United States Military service revolver from 1873 until 1892. At the end of the film, Amy gets ahold of one and attempts to fire it by pulling the trigger, however, is not able to. She quickly realizes that, in order to operate it, the hammer must be fully cocked, allowing her to work it. This is because, like the name suggests, the operation of the revolver means that the trigger is a single action only, meaning that the trigger performs a single action, releasing the trigger. As of this film's release, revolvers are primarily double action, meaning that you can fire the gun by pulling the trigger, which performs a double action, both cocking and releasing the hammer.
