The quote seen at the beginning of the film is from the book of Nahum, in the Bible's Old Testament. In it, the prophet Nahum tells the story of the city of Nineveh and how it was marked for destruction by God in 40 days because of the wickedness of its people. God promises to "make spectacles" of them just as they made spectacles of their own sin, until Jonah convinces them to repent. The movie, as described by the cast and crew, draws many parallels from this verse and story, especially in the way it handles its own themes of "spectacle", the lengths people will go to hoping to take advantage of it, and the consequences thereof. The treatment of Gordy and his eventual rampage, Ricky's attempt to create a bond with the alien with no regard to its malevolent nature, the deaths of the TMZ cameraman and Antlers Holst, even, as Richard Newby of The Hollywood Reporter points out, the curiosity of real-life movie-goers and their inability to turn away from the screen, are all being cited as prime examples of how these themes are revealed throughout the film, to frightening effect.
