In the scene on the tarmac before the flight to Rapid City, the plane's turboprop engines drown out a lot of what the Professor is saying to Thornhill. This was a film device, but not to hide what was said from the audience. It was to disguise the fact that bringing Thornhill up-to-date with what the audience already knew, would take several minutes, not the thirty seconds or so actually shown.
