It's never revealed why Charlotte Blackwood 'Charlie' (Kelly McGillis) is no longer part of Maverick's life. Other than a couple of brief flashbacks, she is never mentioned. Given that Maverick starts a romantic relationship with Penny, it could be Charlie, like most others in Maverick's past, who has died.
