There have been a couple of different attempts to adapt The Princess Bride into a musical. In the mid-2000s, William Goldman, who wrote both the novel and its screenplay adaptation, collaborated on a musical version of The Princess Bride with composer Adam Guettel. Guettel, a Tony-winner for "The Light in the Piazza," is son of "Once Upon a Mattress" composer and children's book author Mary Rodgers and grandson of musical theater legend Richard Rodgers ("Pal Joey;" "Oklahoma;" "The Sound of Music"). However, Guettel and Goldman eventually parted ways and that version failed to move forward. In 2019, Disney Theatrical Productions announced that a different version was well underway, with collaborators including co-book writers Rick Elice (Peter and the Starcatcher, Jersey Boys) and Bob Martin (The Prom, The Drowsy Chaperone) and composer-lyricist David Yazbek.
