It becomes apparent on re-viewing all 5 seasons, (2 of Life on Mars, 3 seasons of Ashes to Ashes), that hints are scattered across all episodes as to the eventual revelations of the series universe and characters back history finally revealed in the season 3 finale of Ashes to Ashes, of how Gene (Philip Glenister), Shaz (Montserrat Lombard), Chris (Marshall Lancaster), Ray (Dean Andrews), and Drake (Keeley Hawes), and the other Police Officers, exist in both Sam Tyler's and Alex Drake's "coma" universe. They aren't "hidden in plain site" at all, in fact once the season 3 finale reveals the secrets, its blatantly obvious what the clues were, as its said straight out, but without context, until the second viewing.
