Paul Dini has said that Harley Quinn was partly inspired by seeing Arleen Sorkin wearing a harlequin's costume in her role as Calliope Jones on an episode of Il tempo della nostra vita (1965). As a result, Dini was subsequently inspired to cast Sorkin as the voice of Harley Quinn. In addition, Dini and Sorkin were college classmates together.
