After six months of pre-production, Paul Maslansky was hired to replace Gary Kurtz as producer, due to Disney's concerns that the movie was going heavily over budget. Maslansky was able to cull the project's expenses down from 20 million to 16 million dollars. At Maslansky's insistence, Kurtz was given an executive producer credit for his work in the film's early development stages.
