There was a debate between Brad Bird and Steve Markowski with how the Giant perceived Hogarth, if he was fascinated by the boy or if he was more like a pet who was loyal but could tire easily. The loyal pet idea stuck early on in the film, at least, as indicated by the Giant nearly nodding off at one point while Hogarth is talking. Markowski was not a fan of animating the Giant's eyes literally rolling as he fell asleep at one point.
