The Master Emerald's role is similar to what is described by Tikal, an ancestor of Knuckles in the game, as conduit of sorts to control the Chaos Emeralds' power. The movie version somewhat has the same purpose, as the Echidna warriors "forged" the seven Chaos Emeralds into the Master Emerald. It also allows the wielder to turn their thoughts into power.
