The movie had a different ending, but was changed and reshot as writer and director Simon Kinberg felt the original ending had a lot of Captain America: Civil War (2016) in it and that it didn't have the entire X-family together and it telescoped down views of the characters' raw emotions and pitted the X-Men against one another. In the original ending, Charles Xavier is sitting alone on a hill and reflects on what has happened and admits he was wrong and that he forgot who he was and that he started all of it and that he didn't see what was going to happen. He returns to the empty school and gets into a car and drives away.
