This show was initially conceived as a straight-to-video children's series called "Bedtime Stories for Lazy Parents", in which a genial old man would sit in a chair in front of a fireplace, speak directly to camera, and read from a big book of fairy tales. The creators thought this would be relatively cheap to produce and would likely be very profitable, since they felt a lot of parents did not have time to read to their kids every night. However, they wanted to use stories in the public domain (since they are free) and most of them were scary. At this point, they decided that an old man reading scary stories to children might have the opposite effect and keep them up at night, but hearing them from other kids might be less frightening. They thought kids usually tell these kinds of stories around a campfire at night, so the concept was changed. However, they felt listening to the stories might not be exciting enough and decided they should actually show them to the audience. The title was changed to "Scary Tales", which is a play on "Fairy Tales", but was later changed when Nickelodeon decided they didn't like the name of the show.
