Sam and Tara's parental abandonment by their father is yet another reversal of a plot point in the original film. Sam's biological father, Billy Loomis, was abandoned by his mother. Following Billy's death, his mother went on to be a Ghostface killer in Scream 2. The Ghostface killers in this film meet and organize their plans on the internet, as Mrs. Loomis and Mickey Altieri do in the first sequel.
