Director Michael Apted stated that casting the right actress to play Elektra King was critical since the character was the center of the story. He wanted a European actress with great range and an enigmatic quality - but preferably not a British actress. For Dr. Christmas Jones, he wanted a young, vibrant Gen-X American actress in her twenties who could bring sassy flair and tomboy attitude to contrast against the character's beauty (which she is often ogled over - much to her irritation). Roger Ebert agreed with Apted's casting choices: in his review of The World is Not Enough, he called Sophie Marceau and Denise Richards "first rate" as Elektra and Christmas.
