According to creator Miles Millar, the biggest change in Superman's past for this show was the death and destruction caused by his arrival in a meteor shower. This was incorporated in the New 52 version of the Supergirl comic, wherein Kara Zor-El comes to Earth in a meteor shower on Smallville.
