The characters of Frank T. Hopkins in Hidalgo (2004) and Nathan Algren in this movie have very similar backgrounds. Both have P.T.S.D. from helping, or aiding in the massacre of Native Americans. They lose themselves in alcohol, and work 1800s Wild West-type shows. They are offered a large amount of money to travel to a foreign land, and are wholly changed by the experience.
