In the novel, Rudi Gunn is every bit as capable as Pitt and Giordino, and even had his own subplot about his solo escape from Mali and back to Washington, D.C. to meet with Sandecker. The film combines Gunn with several characters to turn him into a bumbling comic relief, and his adventure out of Mali is cut entirely. Sandecker also never leaves Cairo until Rudi makes it back to the NUMA ship with the contamination data.
