Part of the movie turns around the battle of William Parrish against his business rival John Bontecou to prevent that Bontecou International absorbs Parrish Communications and destroy it. Despite his prominence in the main plot, Bontecou never appears on-screen, although in the original script he had only one scene in Bontecou International's headquarter where he deceives William Parrish in a brief conversation about the acquisition, saying Parrish that he only could buy Parrish Communications if it would always have his imprint. In the script he is depicted vaguely as "huge, white-haired man, JOHN BONTECOU, 55".
