The producers originally wanted Rue McClanahan to play a version of naive Vivian Cavender from Maude (1972), and Betty White to play a version of man-hungry Sue Ann Nivens from Mary Tyler Moore Show (1970). They switched roles because they didn't want to be typecast. Also the switching of roles persuaded Bea Arthur to join the cast.
