Bob Gale and Robert Zemeckis first wrote a version of the script in the 1970s, right after they attended USC Film School, long before the inception of I racconti della cripta (1989). This script is what they presented in their first meeting with producer John Milius, who passed on it but instead hired them for 1941 - Allarme a Hollywood (1979).
