This was the first time that Sergio Leone and composer Ennio Morricone worked together. The producers thought Morricone would be a great composer for the movie and had set up a meeting between the two. Leone initially wasn't keen on using him for this movie, as he was not a fan of Morricone's score for Duello nel Texas (1963). However, Leone went anyway, and was intrigued when Morricone showed him a picture of both of them in third grade together, something he had completely forgotten. Later on, Michele Lacerenza's initial trumpet performance of Morricone's score made Leone quickly set aside any reservations. Both men developed a close working relationship that lasted through all of Leone's future movies.
