Although Joss Whedon directed the first two Avengers movies, he did not return to direct either of the next two Avengers movies. Some cast members later admitted that Whedon had a difficult time directing such a close group of actors and actresses, since every creative difference he had with a single person would often lead to a discussion with the others as well. Whedon later got embroiled in several public controversies concerning his professional behavior with his ex-wife and several former cast members, which may also have affected his return. Instead, the Russo Brothers, who directed Captain America: The Winter Soldier (2014) and Captain America: Civil War (2016), directed this movie and Avengers: Endgame (2019).
