Gandalf (Sir Ian McKellen) has clearly been around for ages, as evidenced by his vast knowledge and long-time acquaintances with many characters. However, a fact not explicitly stated by the movie is that all Wizards arrived to Middle-earth from Valinor around 1,000 years after Sauron's first defeat at the end of Second Age. None of them participated in the Last Alliance of Men and Elves, which also explains why neither Gandalf nor any other wizard is present nor alluded to in the prologue.
