In November 2021, when Phil Saviano died of gallbladder cancer at age 69, NPR's Sacha Pfeiffer reported on his life and yearslong mission to expose clergy sex abuse. Saviano and Pfeiffer were both portrayed in Spotlight (by actors Neil Huff and Rachel McAdams, respectively). During the piece, Pfeiffer interviewed Huff, who had become friends with Saviano during filming. Huff said, "Phil was truly one of the greats to walk the Earth in our time, I believe. So much of what happened in that movie would not have happened if Phil wasn't who he was."
