Benjamin Sisko is the first commanding officer of a Star Trek series who doesn't start out with the rank of Captain at the beginning of the series. For the first three seasons, Sisko held the rank of Commander. It wasn't until the season three finale, "The Adversary", that he was finally promoted to Captain. This would not be repeated until Star Trek Discovery with Commander Saru.
