In 1789, Louis XVI summoned the Estates General, a general assembly with representatives of the clergy, the nobility, and the commoners. At the time, there were many voices calling for reforms to the political system. Marie Antoinette urged her husband to not concede to any demand for reforms. She was later determined to crush any opposition to the king and the "Ancien Régime" (Old Regime). Her status as a reactionary force was the reason she was hated by revolutionaries.
