Three of Darth Vader's scenes in this movie parallel scenes with Qui-Gon Jinn in Star Wars: Episodio I - La minaccia fantasma (1999). The first line in this movie is one of Darth Vader's henchmen in his shuttle asking to board the Death Star. The first lines in The Phantom Menace are of Qui-Gon Jinn and his pilot asking to be let aboard the Trade Federation Control Ship. Vader's last scenes involve him throwing Emperor Palpatine down a chasm to his death, and being mortally wounded in the process. Qui-Gon Jinn's last scene involved him being mortally wounded by Darth Maul, who was then cut in half by Obi-wan Kenobi, and falls down a chasm. In Qui-Gon Jinn's death scene, he predicts Anakin Skywalker will bring balance, which he did in the former scene. The last shot is an overhead view of Obi-wan Kenobi holding his body next to the chasm into which Darth Maul fell. The second-to-last scene of Darth Vader still alive is an overhead shot of Luke Skywalker holding his mortally wounded body, next to the chasm into which Emperor Palpatine was cast. The two shots are mirror images of each other. In this movie, Luke Skywalker and Darth Vader are on the right, with the chasm on the left. In The Phantom Menace, Qui-Gon Jinn and Obi-wan Kenobi are on the left, with the chasm on the right. Qui-Gon Jinn and Anakin Skywalker/Darth Vader are given a funeral by cremation. The shot of Darth Vader's funeral pyre has his head on the left side of the screen. The shot of Qui-Gon Jinn's pyre has his head on the right. The music from Qui-Gon Jinn's funeral is also played in the scene were Darth Vader is released from surgery in his new armor.
