Stanley Kubrick choose to shoot this film in the full-frame standard academy (1.33:1) format. In the United States a high percentage of multiplexes are not equipped to show this format. Most audiences saw the film with the top and bottom of the frame masked off as if it were shot in spherical widescreen.
