Zuko's hair in season 1 is inspired by the Japanese topknot worn by the nobility and samurai. However, the topknot hairstyles did not include shaving the entire head except for the topknot like we see Zuko do; only the top of the head was shaved, and the sides and back of the head still had hair. In the novel The Rise of Kyoshi, it is explained that this hairstyle is worn by people who have lost an Agni Kai, or a fire ending duel.
