David Fincher was impressed with Gwyneth Paltrow's work in Omicidi di provincia (1993). She was his first choice for the role of Brad Pitt's wife. Paltrow was initially not interested, so Fincher asked her then-boyfriend Brad Pitt to convince her to meet with him.
