The Marines seen lining the dock when John Wayne arrived were members of the Band at Marine Corps Air Facility Kaneohe Bay (its name from 1952-2009 when it was renamed Kaneohe Marine Corps Air Station). They were extras in the film, although they received no extra pay for appearing in it.
